LINUX: Book Review: Learning the Bash Shell, 3rd Edition BOOK DETAILS: Learning the Bash Shell, Third Edition By Cameron Newham Third Edition March 2005 ISBN: 0-596-00965-8 360 pages, $34.95 US, $48.95 CA, L24.95 UK The publication of a 3rd edition of this book indicates both its staying power and its continuing value in today's world where bash is rapidly taking over as the shell of choice. I've purchased both previous editions, and this latest one doesn't disappoint. 'Learning the Bash Shell' is an ideal reference book for at least two significant audiences. If you are an old hand at UNIX shell scripting, you will find virtually everything you need to take full advantage of the power of bash, including the latest 3.0 release. On the other hand, if you are new to shells, this is a good introduction that does NOT take you back to square one; with a little programming background and access to a system on which to experiment, this book makes an excellent teaching tool. The book covers just about every aspect of the shell, as is evident from the Table of Contents: 1. bash Basics 2. Command-Line Editing 3. Customizing Your Environment 4. Basic Shell Programming 5. Flow Control 6. Command-Line Options and Typed Variables 7. Input/Output and Command-Line Processing 8. Process Handling 9. Debugging Shell Programs 10. bash Administration 11. Shell Scripting 12. bash for Your System There are also four Appendices that round out the more arcane reference bits, making this a really comprehensive addition to your bookshelf. The chapters on shell programming are particularly useful. This is a well-written book worth the cover price for anyone who needs to to learn bash.
